Port Hope’s historic St. Lawrence building has a decidedly more international flavour since Abato’s Italian Market opened in December 2009 at 87 Walton Street in the midst of this Victorian streetscape. Owner Gus Abato has brought his 18 years of experience from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Port Hope. His “Market” concept offers foods made fresh to order, in a charming, Mediterranean style deli and dining room overlooking historic Walton Street. The menu includes some of the largest and most unique sandwiches ever to be seen in the area as well as homemade soups, salads, hot Italian dishes, homemade pates, great coffee, pastries, wine and beer. Also on display is a wide selection of fine Italian groceries, cheeses, olive oils, balsamic vinegars, kitchenware, pastas and frozen foods.
The Italian Market was established in 1991 in North end Halifax as a small Italian foods grocery store, the first in Nova Scotia. Today it is one of the largest specialty foods stores in the Atlantic region. Our Port Hope market has brought the most popular features of our 18 years of success to the Northumberland Region. Our unique concept is to give the busy food shopper of today a pleasant atmosphere where they can choose from the finest specialty grocery selection and a wide range of delicious homemade take out foods, put in a catering order for pick up or delivery, grab a fully prepared dinner to take home, order a cappuccino, taste one of our delicious pastries, or simply sit down and enjoy the food, wine, atmosphere and quick service from our deli and floor staff, all under one roof!
